Time Zone Converter
Compare any two world zones instantly. The exact local time, the UTC offset and the time difference — calculated live from the IANA time-zone database. Mobile-first, no signup, no ads.
Short answer
To convert time between two zones, pick the source and target below (city or UTC offset). The converter applies the current daylight-saving rules and shows the equivalent local time, the absolute difference and the UTC offsets for both sides. The full Timezone Matcher grid adds a side-by-side world-clock view with working-hours overlap for remote teams.

UTC, GMT and DST — what is the difference?
UTC — the world standard
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the master clock against which every other time zone is measured. It is set by atomic clocks, it does not observe daylight-saving time, and it never drifts. When two systems need to exchange a timestamp unambiguously, they use UTC.
GMT — historical reference
GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the local time in the United Kingdom at the Greenwich meridian (0°). It was the world standard from 1884 to 1972 and is still used as a name for the UK's winter clock. In summer the UK shifts to BST = GMT + 1. For everyday purposes UTC and GMT are interchangeable; for precise scientific or technical work, only UTC is unambiguous.
DST — the moving target
Daylight Saving Time (DST) shifts the clock forward one hour in spring and back one hour in autumn to align working hours with daylight. The dates differ by region:
- USA: 2nd Sunday of March → 1st Sunday of November
- EU: last Sunday of March → last Sunday of October
- Australia: 1st Sunday of October → 1st Sunday of April
- No DST: most of Asia, all of Africa, much of Latin America, Iceland
Timezone Matcher uses the IANA time-zone database (the same source Linux, macOS and most servers use) so every DST transition is built in. You never need to remember dates.
For remote teams
If you work across multiple zones, the goal is not the conversion itself — it is the overlap of working hours. The Timezone Matcher grid shows every participant's 9-to-17 window in their own local time and shades the rows where all windows overlap. Pick a cell inside the shaded area, click, and the meeting is scheduled in everyone's calendar at the correct local time.
A 3-person team in San Francisco, London and Bangalore has roughly two hours of clean overlap per day (London afternoon / Bangalore evening / SF morning). A 4-person team that adds Sydney drops to zero overlap — so meetings have to rotate. The grid makes both visible at a glance.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert between time zones online?
Use a free converter like Timezone Matcher: enter the source zone (or city), the target zone, and the time. The converter calculates the equivalent local time in the destination, including any daylight-saving offset. No signup required.
What is the difference between UTC and GMT?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the world's primary time standard, set by atomic clocks. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the local time in the UK at the Greenwich meridian. For everyday use they are identical, but UTC is more precise and never shifts for daylight-saving time. UTC officially replaced GMT as the world standard in 1972.
How many time zones are there?
There are 38 distinct time zones currently in use worldwide when you include offsets like UTC+5:30 (India), UTC+9:30 (parts of Australia) and UTC+12:45 (Chatham Islands). The 24 'main' zones are based on 15° of longitude each, but national borders and political choices have added many fractional offsets.
What is the best free time zone converter?
Timezone Matcher is built specifically for remote teams: side-by-side world-clock grid, working-hours overlap shading, one-click meeting scheduling, and a free progressive web app you can install on any phone. No signup, no ads.
How do I find a good meeting time across multiple time zones?
Add every participant's city to the grid. The overlap of all participants' working hours (9 to 17 local) shows the windows when nobody is sleeping. Pick a cell inside that window and click — Timezone Matcher generates a calendar invite with the correct local time for each attendee.
Does daylight saving time affect the conversion?
Yes. When a region enters or exits daylight-saving time the UTC offset changes by one hour. Timezone Matcher uses the IANA time-zone database, so all conversions respect each region's current DST rules automatically — no manual adjustment needed.
What is the time difference between New York and London?
London is 5 hours ahead of New York for most of the year (NY UTC-5, London UTC+0). During the few weeks when one region observes daylight-saving time and the other does not (mid-March and early November), the difference temporarily shifts to 4 hours.
Why do some time zones have a 30-minute or 45-minute offset?
Some countries adopted offsets that don't align with the global 15°/hour grid for historical, political or geographical reasons. India (UTC+5:30) sits between two main zones and split the difference. Nepal (UTC+5:45) chose its capital's longitude exactly. The Chatham Islands (UTC+12:45) follow the same logic. These are rare but real.
